Break In Your PRO Like A Pro

Just like your favorite pair of jeans or a well-worn baseball glove, our PRO mats require a break-in process, or PROcess as we like to call it, which is really more like a ritual. As you practice, the top surface will naturally wear in, transforming it into one that’s uniquely yours. The more you stretch, twist, sweat and breathe together, the better it gets—just like your practice.

Designed to last a lifetime (with a guarantee to back it up), you’ll never wear your PRO mat out, you’ll just wear it in. In fact, some of our very first (and now legendary) Black Mat PROs are still being used today—that’s nearly 20 years of practice and still flowing strong. Regardless of which break-in method you use, it’s really all about making the mat yours.

The best way to break in your mat is practice, practice, practice, but if you want to speed things up a little, try the salt method below:

  • I would like to sprinkle sea salt outside and leave it there for 24 hours. Can the PRO be left outside if the temperature is below or near freezing?

    • A great question for this time of year, Ali. We don’t recommend exposing a PRO Series mat to freezing or below freezing temperatures, as it may compromise the performance and integrity of the mat. However, the break-in PROcess can be performed indoors with a towel or two placed under the mat to catch any excess salt. We hope this helps!

  • I want to try! I have a mat for over a year, but still a problem with the slip. But I did not do anything special, just practicing.
    Thank you!

  • Hi! I've scrubbed my Pro mat with salt and feel like I've tried everything for the ~11 months of practice on my mat. Any tips for making the mat more sticky? Thanks! :)

    • Hi Hailey,

If your mat is fully broken in after salt scrubs and 11 months of practice, slipping may be a result of sweat. If you find that you’re slipping when sweat is present, we recommend using a yoga performance towel to absorb the sweat and provide a great grip. Please feel free to email our customer care team at info@manduka.com, so we can better understand your practice and provide the best recommendation. We’re happy to help!

      • Not even the towel works. Sorry but my hands and feet are not sweaty at all and they slip all the time. The towel makes it harder to hold postions

        • Dear Katherine, Some of our towels work best for sweaty palms while others are great for dry grip. Our customer care team will be reaching out to help you find the best gear to support your personal practice.

      • For my first use of my new PRO mat, on a cool night, I was disturbed by how slippery it was, with only a minor moisture on my hands and feet. I was reading about the salt method and note that people are still talking about slipperiness after doing the salt and months of break-in. I'm not going to use a performance towel, because this was not a problem with my old mats. Should I just give up an return it? Thanks, Bruce

        • Hi Bruce, when a mat is brand new, it may take a bit of time to break-in, just like running shoes, denim jeans or a baseball glove. We intentionally created this mat to last for a lifetime; it only gets better the more you use it instead of wearing out. We are sure that you will love the lifetime of support - our customer care team will be reaching out to you to help you find the best solution to support your practice.

  • I am new to your Yoga mats. My Yoga instructor recommended your mat. You have so many models. Looking at your web site, I have concluded that your pro series is the best. In this category, I am looking for a 26"wide x 86" Length thickest mat. Can you tell me which model that will be?
I am puzzled by breaking in required for your Yoga mat. I read review after review and observed that so many customers are complaining about this break in...how tedious and painful the process is. Besides this is the only consistent complaint about your Yoga mat by those customers who are unhappy with your mat.
Here is my suggestion: Why not do this "break in of the Yoga mat" as part of your manufacturing process and then put the mat as a finished product, ready to use for sale? I do not understand why you have not responded to these customer concerns for this long? Could you please respond? From what I see on the web, you seem to have an outstanding product and customer service and frankly I am puzzled by this.

    • Hi Suresh, It sounds like you are looking for the Manduka PRO Extra Long which is 85” for extra room and 6 mm of extra dense support. You are also correct that our PRO mats do indeed break-in, just like running shoes, denim jeans or a baseball glove. We intentionally created this mat to last for a lifetime; it only gets better the more you use it instead of wearing out. Because of this design, you will never have to worry about the mat losing support, flaking or being replaced. As you use your mat more and more, breaking in the top surface, it becomes uniquely yours, molded by your personal practice. Our customer care team will be reaching out to you to help you find the perfect mat for your practice.

  • I have had my Manuka Pro Mat for almost two years. I've done the salt scrub and have practiced an average of 4x per week. I love the feel of the mat under hands and feet, until I start to sweat (5-10mins). At that point the grip goes and I start to slip. I purchased two of those Manuka rugs that you no longer carry and they work great once damp or wet, however, I prefer to practice without the rug. Is there any other method that you can recommend to stop the slippage? Thanks

    • Dear Deryl, for a sweaty practice we recommend a preformance towel that works together with your mat for the ultimate support and grip. Our customer care team will be reaching out to help you find the best gear to support your personal practice.

  • Hi I had bought a pro black in 2009. I have curls in the mat now. Can you help me with the same.

  • I did the salt method and have been practicing on the mat for over a year and choose not to use it anymore because it's slippery. I wish I hadn't spend $100 on it. I do like how cushiony and firm it is.

    • Dear Priscilla, we are honored to be a part of your practice and are sure that you will find the best support on a PRO. Our Customer Care team will be reaching out to guide you.

  • Instead of Apple cider vinegar, are we able to use white vinegar instead as our own mat wash? If so, what should the percentage mix be?

    • Dear Cindy, typically a 50/50 blend of any natural vinegar and water will work to clean your mat. When in doubt, our Mat Wash is another great option. Our Customer Care team will be reaching out to help recommend the best care for your particular mat.

  • Hi, would it be ok to use regular salt to scrub the mat with, or does it have to be sea salt? Also how fine do the grains have to be?

    • Dear E, we typically recommend using coarse sea salt as we have found this works best. Our customer care team will be reaching out to help provide you with more detailed information and help you break in your PRO.

  • […] again. It still felt slippery after drying under the sun and scrubbing. I need to try doing a salt scrub next to see if that helps. I really hope it works after I do a salt scrub because I’m not […]

  • Dear all,

can I try the sea salt method with another Manduka mat (eko) as well?

    Best, June

    • Dear June,

Great question! The salt treatment is only recommended for our PRO series mats. Our customer care team will be reaching out shortly to answer any questions you have regarding the eKO mat's unique make-up and instructions for optimal performance and care. Thank you!

  • leave the mat in the full sun for 3+ hrs. this softens the film on top, should be hot to touch. sprinkle the salt on, coarse salt like kosher salt, use wet towel to scrub. let it dry without cleaning up the salt. once dried, scrub hard with wet towel all over. clean off the salt, and it should be good to go. still, if the mat is wet, it might be little slippery, but not to a point you will slip and fall.
