Turn Your Old Yoga Mat into a New Pair of Flip-Flops (No, You Really Can!)

Yoga and lifestyle brand Manduka has launched the LiveON collection, which included the first 100% recyclable yoga mat. And get this -- it can be recycled into flip-flops or another yoga mat (and vice versa)! Just in time for sandal season, we're pretty excited about these comfy little yoga mats for your feet, which are available to buy right now.

The mats are designed with PLUSfoam, a material that was created to replace substances like polyurethane and rubber, which are usually recycled using toxic chemicals and biodegrade slowly. Typically, after every yoga mat has seen its day, it'll just end up in a land fill, but Manduka hopes to cut down on this through its sustainable product manufacturing. When your LiveON mat or filp-flops are gonners, you can mail them back to Manduka, who works with PLUSfoam to turn them into other LiveON products. The foam is ground up and heated, so no chemicals needed to break down the material.

Manduka hopes to be able to develop a similar closed-loop system for all their mats in the future, said CEO Sky Meltzer. Until then, Manduka is proud to say that production of their other lines yoga mats do not emit toxins into the atmosphere and any scrap materials are collected and reduced.
