The Yoga of Parenting

We love following @NamasateTiff on Instagram. This week she shared her thoughts on yoga, motherhood, and the ways in which they inform one another.

"I came across this quote the other day, "Peace starts within us -- we cannot bring to the world what we do not have to offer."

This is why my personal practice of yoga and meditation is so important as a mother. If I want to create a peaceful environment in my home, and raise peaceful and compassionate human beings, it must first start within. This idea - in order to give, you must first fill your own cup - is not a foreign notion. If I don't prioritize the time to fill myself back up, I will have nothing left to offer, and my family will notice the difference. I will also be doing my daughters a huge service... when they witness my regular self-care, they will learn by example to honor themselves and their needs if/when they are someday mothers, and even just when simply finding balance in life later on.

Parenting as a Yogi is, in essence, the ultimate surrender. You are pushed beyond your emotional barriers and preconceived limits. Being a mother challenges in ways an asana practice never could. Emotional triggers are stirred up and sanity is tried and tested. All the while, an ever expanding heart space is overflowing with the utmost divine joy and love. Children are our mirrors; a continuous reminder of all our own "stuff" we must work through and release. Our karma, if you will. Every day I (re)learn that I set the tone. Whatever kind of energy I put out there, they will mimic and it returns right back to me. Another reason why this practice is so essential.

Incorporating my little ones into my practice is really wonderful on so many levels. I am certain I wouldn't make enough time for my practice if it weren't involving them! It's so fulfilling to witness the body awareness and mindfulness children are naturally inclined to have. And when introduced at an early age, they just soak it all up like a sponge. It's also a sweet and fun bonding experience for us all. We are making beautiful memories together. They remind me to slow down and take life for exactly what it is; this moment and this moment only.
