From The Heart

My Manduka has been with me through my yoga journey as a student and teacher. My mat is my sanctuary, and has seen my up and downs as well as progression. I have a special bond with my mat that can not be replaced.

Cancer Support Community

Cancer Support Community – Redondo Beach offers a free program for cancer patients, and their families and loved-ones. CSC's goal is to help as many cancer patients as possible recover from the physical and emotional effects of cancer to the greatest extent possible. CSC's psychological support and educational programs are designed to address the loss of control, hopelessness and social isolation that cancer patients and their families often experience.

One of the supportive offerings at CSC is free yoga. Throughout the summer, they have been hosting Yoga on the Pier, a free yoga class on the Redondo Beach Pier for the community to enjoy together.

Manduka was happy to donate yoga gear for the use of not only the Redondo Beach location, but various locations throughout Southern California that were in need of quality yoga gear.

Check out the Yoga on the Pier events, as the Cancer Support Center will also be raffling off some Manduka goodies to raise money for all of their supportive endeavors.

Newark Firefighters

In Newark, New Jersey, the Firefighters have implemented a new yoga initiative to help them learn to stay calm and centered during their very intense missions.

So far the firefighters are really seeing the benefits. One firefighter says: “When you’re doing firefighting, you’re in confined spaces and you have to contort your body and relax your body to go through small spaces, so with this, it teaches you about moving your body.”

By teaming up with Newark Yoga Movement, the Firefighters are sure to receive excellent classes. Debby Kaminsky, the founder of community based Newark Yoga Movement is excited to help these Firefighters learn how to transition between their work life and their home life: "Practicing yoga helps to settle yourself. It helps you to become more present so you can just be focusing on the current moment instead of thinking about the past.”

Read more about the Firefighters in Newark, and Newark Yoga Movement here.

Manduka was happy to donate some sturdy PROlites to help these Firefighters begin a life changing exercise!

We'd like to credit Jimbo, our favorite Firefighter with setting a wonderful and beneficial trend for the Firefighters of New Jersey!

Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica

In January of 2013, Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica started their first ever yoga program at 3 of their Santa Monica sites. The youth there have been learning basic yoga asanas, pranayama, and each class has been focused around a centering thought, such as gratitude.

Throughout the course, teachers are conducting tests to determine stress levels and self-esteem. So far the kids are loving the weekly yoga classes - the peace and balance they are feeling is evident in the photos below. Manduka was happy to supply yoga mats for classes.

P.S. 119

P.S. 119 in Brooklyn decided that incorporating an after-school yoga program would have a wonderful impact on their students. Having enough mats for each student to have their own sacred space was very important to them. With state testing coming up for the kids, the Principal and a devoted teacher named Laurie Basloe wanted to get this program started to make sure the students had a stress-free environment to practice focusing and breathing - skills that will surely translate well during the tests!

Manduka was happy to donate mats to support the after-school yoga program!

Children’s Home & Aid Society of Illinois

Children’s Home & Aid Society of Illinois serves over 40,000 children and families in Illinois that have been victims of abuse, neglect, poverty and a host of other issues. The Excellence Academy is an innovative and unique program that serves at-risk foster children. The children come from varied backgrounds, but most have been shipped from one placement to another throughout their lives, never experiencing a sense of stability, community or confidence that youth with more traditional childhoods experience. As a result, many foster youth tend do poorly in school and lack independent living skills, which perpetuates their struggles well into adulthood.

The team at the Excellence Academy instructs and organizes classes and activities that assist the kids in comprehending crucial life skills. In addition to the sizeable struggles that they already face, many have not been taught basic self-care skills, severely impacting the likelihood of their success as they age. One of the lesson plans for 2013 is geared towards physical fitness and physical awareness.

The Excellence Academy has been determined to implement a yoga program for the youth, and has lined up a very motivated instructor to lead the classes, and when we learned that all the program was missing to start moving forward with yoga classes were mats, we were excited to offer our support!
