Attitude Determines Altitude

Maitri karuna mudito 'pekshanam sukha dukha punya apunya vishayanam bhavanatas chitta prasadanam

According to the great rishi Patanjali, there is more than one path to yoga.  In other words, one does not have to practice asana, pranayama and meditate to achieve the state of yoga, which is a peaceful mind. In sutra 1.33, Patanjali prescribes four (4) attitudes to be cultivated toward four (4) distinct objects (people). When these four attitudes are cultivated toward 4 distinct objects over time, one's mind will automatically become clear and lucid.

These four attitudes are:
Delight or Appreciation
Indifference / Equanimity

The four objects (people) are:
Those who are in their agreeable space. People who are content or happy.
Those who are not in their agreeable space. People who are unhappy or suffering. Opposite of the 1st type.
Virtuous people.  People that do good things in this world. People who are living their dharma.
People of vice. People who do things deemed wicked by society.  Opposite of the 3rd type.


By cultivating an attitude of friendliness toward people who are happy, you become like these people. Surround yourself with those who have what they want and want what they have and you will soon find peace of mind. It is said we become who we hang around.  

By cultivating an attitude of compassion toward those who suffer, you will soon find peace of mind. You don't want to have joy or delight when you see someone suffer. Likewise, you wouldn't want to have compassion for those who are happy and content.

By cultivating an attitude of delight or appreciation toward people who make this world a better place, you will find peace of mind. When you see someone do something good, like return a lost wallet, you should have delight and appreciation. When you see someone help an elderly or disabled person across a busy street, you should have an attitude of appreciation. When this attitude is cultivated toward these types of people, you will soon have peace of mind.

By cultivating an attitude of indifference toward those who do bad things, your mind will become clear and lucid. If you surround yourself with people of vice, you soon will become a person of vice. If you hang out with thieves, you too will soon be a thief. According to Patanjali, one should not have an attraction or even an aversion toward this type. If you become unaffected by these individuals, you will soon find peace of mind.

Featured Retailer: Smiling Dog Yoga

Manduka is proud to introduce Smiling Dog Yoga in San Luis Obispo (Manduka's hometown) as a featured retailer!

When Lisa Terranova-Pittelli and her husband considered opening Smiling Dog Yoga in San Luis Obispo, CA a few years back, they were excited at the prospect of a yoga studio in a beautiful rental property, which includes two studios, ample retail space, a treatment room and large courtyard. However, they knew that to see it work financially in these slower economic times, they would need to make the most of their space. Today, Smiling Dog consists of a yoga studio, vegetarian cafe, massage and acupuncture and eco-boutique. In fact, their yoga program, while it's the heart of the business, makes up half of the total revenue. The other limbs of Smiling Dog are an integral part, not only of its success, but of the overall client experience. Its set them apart in the community. Lisa says, "One of the unexpected pleasures of my job is managing our retail boutique and working with like-minded companies such as Manduka who are putting eco-responsible business practice to work."

#Practicing Wonder At Wanderlust

Wanderlust Yoga & Music Festival - a one-of-a-kind festival bringing together the world's best yoga teachers and best performers in rock & roll, all in a setting of breathtaking natural beauty. It is a place to relax, unwind, bend, dance, revel, and contemplate. It’s a community of like-minded people who share a common set of interests and values. It’s a chance to escape the mundane and dwell in the extraordinary. And this year at Wanderlust, Manduka brought the unexpected to festival-goers.

Hoping to inspire creative expression in an astonishing way, Manduka activated something special to help Wanderlusters take their #practice off the mat – an aerial rig! While resting between yoga classes, crowds watched in awe as professionals from the Kinetic Arts Center in Oakland, CA showed first-timers the ropes (quite literally). As Wanderlusters climbed, learned mind-bending stunts on silks, and hung hands-free from the trapeze – everyone realized the significance of trying something they’ve never done and pushing yourself to go further – not just on an aerial rig. Manduka hoped to motivate the yoga community with the idea that their #practice can inspire progress in all facets of life. And, that #practicing yoga doesn’t only happen on the mat, it can happen anywhere – even 30 feet in the air.

#Practice Community Classes

From peace, to joy, to silence, to vibrance – yoga #practice enables us to be mindful of how we take our #practice off of the mat and into our lives. Being flexible on the mat reminds us to #practice flexibility when life gets complicated. It allows us to be aware of the boundaries we break through in the workplace, and not just in our arm balances. It provides us the serenity in silence that once seemed uncomfortable. As part of our 2010 #Practice Campaign, Manduka brought the local yoga community together to create inspiration for their yoga #practice, and to shine a light on how our #practice extends into daily life.

Manduka’s #Practice Community classes brought together world renowned yoga teachers and our nations most inspiring musical artists, with Manduka and the Los Angeles yoga community – all under one roof, on the mats we #practice on everyday. These series of free yoga classes – each with a different purpose, invited everyone to take their inspiration beyond the edges of their mats and #practice community with Manduka! Manduka Ambassador Hala Khouri helped LA yogis #practice purpose during her mixed level flow at Yoga Glo. Ambassador Ashley Turner taught a #practice inner power Vinyasa Flow to the tunes of DJ Drez at Exhale Spa, and Kia Miller & Tommy Rosen combined Hatha and Kundalini while inspiring us to #practice connection at Yoga Co. Each class brought in curious Los Angelenos for an event to remember, and each class was dedicated to aiding a charity in need. As you #practice on your mat, we hope that you remember to take your inspiration off the mat, out of the studio, and into your everyday actions.
