Tri Layer Technology for optimal combination of grip, durability and slip-resistance.
Grip & Durability (Top Layer): ‘Sea Grass’ surface texture is naturally grippy; the closed-cell surface keeps out moisture (sweat) from seeping into the mat and breeding bacteria for better durability.
Dual Function Cushion (Bottom Layer): Thicker, open-cell bottom layer provides lightweight cushion. It can also be reversed to function as the top surface for more traction. Just flip over for a sweatier practice!
Stretch-resistant Scrim (Center): Made from biodegradable cotton and polyester blend; Binds top/bottom layer together with heating process, eliminating need for toxic glues.
Natural & Biodegradable: Made from biodegradable, non-Amazon harvested tree rubber with non-toxic foaming agents and non-AZO dyes.
To Clean: We recommend using Manduka Mat Restore or a diluted organic cider vinegar wash (50/50) and a damp cloth or sponge. It is recommended that you DO NOT put the eKO™ mat in the washing machine as it will encourage the material to break down (biodegrade).
To Store: Do not leave the mat exposed to excessive amounts of sunlight. If wet, allow the mat to dry before rolling up.
Through Manduka's manufacturing process, the eKO Series mats are 99% latex free, and safe to use for people with latex sensitivities. However, if you know you are sensitive to even traces of latex then we recommend you purchase from our PRO Series yoga mats.
The eKO Mat is made from sustainably harvested tree rubber. Unlike other rubber mats available today, the foaming agents used to create the eKO are non-toxic. This means that no toxic chemicals have gone into the manufacturing process to soften rubber; when the eKO mat is disposed of and biodegrades, it will not leave behind a toxic residue. Additionally, instead of using synthetic polyester for reinforcement, we have chosen to use a blend of polyester and natural cotton.

I suffer from flat feet, with very little cushion in the heels. This is normally not a problem for me, since I cushion my feet with special soles and slippers, but since yoga is performed barefoot I really needed a mat with cushion built in. At the same time, I didn't want something so soft as to interfere with my poses.
This mat is just about perfect in this respect. It manages to cushion my feet (and other joints) but at the same time allows me to feel I have a firm mat underneath me. I can't quite explain it since it sounds contradictory. How can a mat give support, and protect joints, while not being soft? Beats me, but that is what this mat does. And it does a very good job of it. After an hour of standing poses, I no longer ache all over.
As for overall performance, I haven't had it for so long as to truly break it in yet so we'll see down the road. So far, it works wonderfully as long as I am not sweaty. As soon as my feet or hands become damp I start to glide. Which is in one way a good thing, since it forces me to really balance in my poses but at the same time annoying and possibly dangerous. I have wiped it down with gentle soap and vinegar a few times now but it does not seem to help with the issue. Up next.... more usage. I keep my fingers crossed, since everything else is perfect about this mat. Including the scent.
I am strange, but I've always loved the scent of rubber and so I am thrilled getting down on all fours on this mat. However, it is quite a strong scent so if you are scent sensitive you will want to air it out, and scrub it down really good a few times. The scent does lessen over time.
Overall, a good mat if only I can figure out how to make it a bit stickier so I don't glide on it. Though...a towel of course solves that problem.
