Celebrate Earth Day By Recycling Your Mat!

Earth Day is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited about it! Being green is important to everyone at Manduka, and that’s why we teamed up with Stephanie Stano from Recycle Your Mat over two years ago.

Recycle Your Mat is a program that Stephanie started when she began to wonder what happened to all of the old yoga mats from the people in her yoga class. Now she’s on a mission to save our world one mat at a time. Recycle Your Mat was formed around three basic ideas: keep yoga mats out of landfills, create a system for yoga mat recycling, and recycle/upcycle mats in an ecologically conscious way. Stephanie loves sailing, hiking, and camping and feels that by curbing some of the waste created by our consumer society, we can help protect the earth’s healthy outdoor spaces.

In many ways, yogis that send in their mat are supporting ideas and dreams that may never have been realized had they thrown their mat in the trash instead. When you send a mat in to Recycle Your Mat, it is often provided as material for other companies to reuse or upcycle, and is also used for product testing as well as new products. Just one yoga mat provides work for Stephanie, the cleaners that sanitize the mats, the manufacturers that use the material to make a new product, the business owner that distributes the new product, and the retailers that sell that new product. Since the beginning of this year, Recycle Your Mat has been working with more U.S. manufacturers and has seen the number of products using the mats double in quantity since last year. More and more companies are looking to add mats to their products, or expand the product line they have that reuses the mats.

Recycle Your Mat’s 2012 goal is to collect 5,000 mats, and we are here to help! To celebrate Earth Day weekend, Manduka is offering 20% off of any mat, as well as a FREE Recycle Your Mat Kit. By using the Promo Code HOME, you will receive a Recycle Your Mat Kit including instructions and a shipping label so that you can send your mat to Stephanie in Oregon. These Recycle Your Mat Kits offered by Manduka are only available for those living within the Continental US. For anyone outside of the US, it is still possible for you to ship your mat to Portland, Oregon, and there are also other ways you can recycle your mat.
